It all started with a hand shake and in May 2001, the Dr. Richard F. Clark H.E.L.P. Medical Clinic opened the doors ten years ago. Dr. Clark, a local pathologist, saw the need for a free medical clinic to serve the uninsured in our community.
Through his relationships at Sentara and other members of the original Clinic Steering Committee, the clinic first opened for services at the Hampton Health Department. The Health Department allowed the H.E.L.P. Clinic to open two evenings per week. The Steering Committee continued to recruit local physicians to volunteer at the clinic as well as nurses and nurse practitioners. Over these past ten years invaluable partnerships have been formed and maintained in support of the clinic and the patients we serve. Sentara and the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters Foundation have supported the H.E.L.P. Clinic since the beginning. Riverside and Mary Immaculate later came on board and now all three hospital systems support local free clinics through Project Care. Project Care was built in part by all of the free clinics coming together to provide specialty care to patients through a system of referrals to local physicians in the community. The Virginia Healthcare Foundation has just awarded Project Care and the local free clinics, to include the H.E.L.P. Clinic, the Unsung Heroes Award for their efforts. The clinic is also a member of the Virginia Association of Free Clinics and receives state budgeted funds because of our membership. A small in house pharmacy provides necessary medication to our patients as well as a program known as the Pharmacy Connection. The clinic has grown from two evening clinics to four days per week hosting five clinics (two morning clinics and three evening clinics). The clinic is home to 800 patients and in just one year provided over $3.3 million in medical services and medication to those patients. Thank you Dr. Clark and the H.E.L.P. Clinic Steering Committee for making this ministry a reality for the thousands of patients served over these past ten years.
